Travelling with children

During the school holidays thousands of New Zealand families go on a vacation, be it domestic or overseas, and it’s an exciting time especially for the kids. However, unless you’re well prepared, an exciting holiday can turn stressful. Auckland Airport understands this, and that’s why we have organised the following events and facilities to help make sure your journey is enjoyable.

For passengers traveling with children, we allow bottles up to 100 ml in your carry-on luggage. For baby stroller allowances, please check with your airline.

Medicine allowances differ from country to country. If you’re traveling overseas, please check the allowances of your holiday destination. However, we recommend you take a First-aid pack with the essentials such as:

  • Sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher
  • Prescription medicines
  • Thermometer
  • Pain reliever
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Sticky plasters
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Cough and cold medicine
  • Bandages and tape
  • Insect repellent
  • Antihistamine cream to soothe insect bites and stings
  • Calamine lotion for soothing rashes and sunburn
  • Rehydration powder for preventing dehydration
  • Ice or gel packs
  • Saline lotion and an eye bath
  • Water purification tablets
  • Emergency contact numbers.

(This is only a basic guideline please check with a medical professional for any specific conditions)

Traveling tips

Here are some top tips on traveling with children so you can make the most of your holiday:

  • Check your children’s passports weeks before departure. Make sure they’re still valid. If they’re already expired, don’t wait until the last minute to renew.
  • Get appy, there are a selection of children’s games and apps that you can find on your mobile or tablet device these can also be very educational. Keep your children entertained without having to carry baskets of toys.
  • Don’t let the bugs bite. Make sure you bring insect repellent wherever you go. Antibacterial wipes and hand sanitiser are also useful to keep germs away when you can’t find washing facilities.
  • Keep your children entertained and occupied by giving them a child-friendly camera or travel journal. Kids love to explore and observe new surroundings. You might be surprised at some of the pictures they take. Get them to draw or list interesting things they see in a journal. All these can be nice mementos to take back home.
  • Make sure you bring the right clothing for the climate of your destinations. Don’t forget to pack gloves, scarf and beanies if you’re going skiing, or jandals if you’re going to the tropics.
  • Be patient and take your time. Kids love to explore and don’t understand time pressure as well as we do. So make sure you allow enough time in your travel itinerary to avoid missing your flight or other holiday plans.
